Investing in cyber security is frequently seen as an overhead expense (in fact all of IT is viewed that way). Here are some reasons to change that.

The world has changed dramatically in the last few years, and in many ways, this has been thanks to the rise of the Internet and emerging technologies. For many reasons, this shift in the way the world operates has improved the way we live, but there are always those looking to take advantage and capitalize on change.

Throughout the Internet revolution, hackers have made progress in leaps and bounds and have used the skills and expertise they’ve gained to infiltrate companies, both large and small. Regardless of the size of your business, if you hold personal or confidential data on your computers, then this data could be at risk. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons it’s worth investing in cyber security today.

Safeguard Against Advancing Hacker Technology

Hackers are getting far better at what they do. The methods and techniques used by these people have, in recent years, gotten more and more sophisticated. No longer is it safe to rely on simple systems to protect your valuable data. So much so in fact, that big businesses are now hiring hackers to develop strategies to combat malicious attacks on their information to make sure they’re ahead of the curve.

The High Price of Data Loss

Data loss can be catastrophic for businesses, and restoring a company from a data breach can be a costly procedure to say the least — not to mention that it stops a business in its tracks until the problem is fixed. It’s far better to ensure this doesn’t happen in the first place.

With the technology hackers are employing to get their hands on company data becoming smarter, making sure you’re one step ahead of the perpetrators is paramount to the continued success of your company. More Personal Information Online

More personal information is available online for hackers to exploit than ever before, and in a world dominated by social media, this doesn’t look set to change anytime soon. Hackers prey on those who overshare their personal information, and with new technology allowing hackers to target more sophisticated platforms for data, our personal information is at an increased risk.

Although the penalties for such crimes are severe, exploiting personal data for financial reward is the cornerstone of cybercrime and with huge sums of money to be made — it’s no wonder some will take the risk. Being cautious not to give away too much online means that even in the event of a data breach, you’ll be less likely to fall victim to cybercrime. If, for example, a social media site is hacked and everything you’ve ever shared is made available to criminals, then cloning your identity online wouldn’t be difficult if you’ve provided that site with all of your accurate personal details.

Fraudsters could use this information to apply for credit cards and take out loans in your name, and identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in recent years.

  1. Excellent article, it’s incredibly difficult to communicate to non-technical corporate leaders to make this investment. It’s almost always AFTER something bad happens. As IT professionals, it’s our job to find better ways to get the point across.
